Working Farm Visit

Sheering Season in Rhodes

The Rhodes farmers are getting ready to shear sheep.  Because of the cold climate farmers only sheer once a year.  This produces a very good quality and length of wool – extremely  popular amongst the buyers.

The Barkly East,  Rhodes,  Elliot and Maclear sheep farmers produce a total of 1.2 million kilograms of wool / 1200 ton yearly.  At between R60/70 per kilogram this comes to an amount of R72 million rand generated.

All the shorn wool gets transported to Port Elizabeth and sold on auction to buyers from all over the world.
